However, you can keep the beauty and charm of your hardwood floor and then get the best of both worlds with adding a large area rug as a subtle centerpiece. Or, if you and your partner just can't decide, an area rug might be the perfect balance between carpet and hardwood floors to make you both happy.
Tips and Techniques for Area Rugs
While your first inclination might be to get area rugs that are proportionate to the room measurements, if you choose a rug that has extended length or width, you can add dynamic shapes to the room instead. Your simple yet elegant rug can transform a simple room by creating a statement piece of style against simple furnishings and wall colors.
If you love your brand new queen or king size bed, but you belatedly realize that the whole room is just now feeling a little bit cramped, use horizontal stripes to extend the width of the room… or at least create the illusion that your room is wider than it is. Or, bring up the level of luxury by adding a super fluffy rug that does more than add comfort to your toes, but also gives a strong addition of texture to the whole design.
No matter how you bring a rug into your room, it adds a strong new element than can be expertly utilized to combine design aesthetics or complete the geometry of a room. Small and at the foot of the bed, or large enough to show only a peek of wooden floor at the edges, an area rug can revitalize the feel of the primary bedroom.

One interesting observation when putting this gallery together is that there are a few examples of rugs in bedrooms with carpet. Normally, rugs are placed on hardwood or laminate flooring; however, in some instances rugs are placed on top of carpet.
Worth the Investment?
While you can buy inexpensive rugs, quality area rugs can easily cost more than $1,000. The question is whether that's a worthwhile investment for a bedroom floor?
The good news is that if you're not sure, you can always see how it goes without a rug for a while and if the cold, hard floor bothers you (assuming you have hardwood or tile flooring), then go out and buy a large rug.
I think placing an area rug in the bedroom in such a way so that when you step out of bed, your feet land squarely on the rug with ample room to make your way out of the bedroom while walking on the floor. It's not pleasant walking on cold floors with bare feet first thing in the morning (unless you like to wake up to a shock).
This type of placement means the rug will be oriented length-wise perpendicular to the bed creating a cross shape effect. This way you have plenty of rug extending beyond the width of the bed.
As for the end of the bed, it's nice to have it extend beyond the foot of the bed too which means you may place it a few feet off the head of the bed. This is a pretty standard placement.
